Feeling isolated as the only African American in her sixth grade class, Jessi gains a sense of belonging by participating in the Baby-sitters Club, learning sign language in order to communicate with a deaf child, and dancing in a ballet.

Only Jessi knows what's really wrong with one of the girls in her dance class. Jessi volunteers to help out in a ballet class for children. While helping, Jessi discovers a secret about Mary, one that could hurt her. Jessi has to decide if she should tell someone and risk losing a friendship.
